Foldable phone rental in Malaysia through Cinch starts at RM189/month for the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE on an 18-month plan. The Z Flip7 is RM273, the Z Fold7 is RM496 and the OPPO Find N6 is RM595. Renting suits two-to-three-year upgraders, but buying wins if you keep phones longer.

Foldables are the most expensive phones you can put in your pocket, and they're also the ones most likely to need a costly screen repair. Both facts make a monthly plan worth a look.

Cinch is a device subscription service in Malaysia. You pay a monthly fee for a phone, then return it, upgrade or buy it at the end of the term. This guide covers which foldables Cinch has in stock today, what each costs over a full term compared with the retail price, and when buying outright is the better call.

• The Galaxy Z Fold7 is RM496 over 18 months, RM586 over 12, RM965 over 6 and RM1,654 over 3. Its RRP is RM7,799.

• The OPPO Find N6 is RM595 over 18 months, RM705 over 12, RM830 over 6 and RM1,033 over 3. Its RRP is RM8,699.

The 3-month prices are for short projects or trying a foldable before committing. For everyday use, the 12 and 18-month plans are where renting makes sense.

Today you can rent the Z Flip7 FE, Z Flip7, Z Fold7 and OPPO Find N6. Samsung's newer Z Fold8, Z Flip8 and Z Fold8 Ultra are listed on Cinch but are out of stock, so you can't subscribe to them yet.

The Z Fold7 is the work-first pick. It has a wider cover screen for typing while folded, Samsung's first 200MP camera on a Z-series phone, and a large unfolded screen for side-by-side apps.

The Z Flip7 is the compact one. It has an edge-to-edge FlexWindow cover screen and a 4,300mAh battery. The Z Flip7 FE has the same clamshell idea for less. It has a 6.7-inch main screen, a 3.4-inch cover screen, IP48 water resistance and an Exynos 2400 chip.

The OPPO Find N6 is the camera-first book-style foldable. It has an 8.12-inch inner display, a 200MP Hasselblad main camera, a 6,000mAh battery and an 8.93mm folded profile.

It depends on the model and how long you keep the phone. On an 18-month plan, the Z Flip7 FE costs RM3,402 in total, which is RM597 less than its RRP. The Z Flip7 totals RM4,914, RM515 more than its RRP. The Z Fold7 totals RM8,928, RM1,129 more. The Find N6 totals RM10,710, RM2,011 more.

Remember that you return the phone at the end of a rental unless you choose to buy it. If you plan to keep a Fold7 or Flip7 for three or four years, paying the retail price once is cheaper than renting. Renting wins on cash flow and on protection: there's no RM4,000 to RM8,000 payment upfront, and Cinch covers 90% of accidental damage repairs. It also suits people who want the next model in 18 months without having to sell a used foldable first.

Cinch Damage Coverage pays 90% of repair costs for accidental damage, such as a broken display, and you pay the remaining 10%. You don't arrange the repair yourself. Cinch collects the device and its repair team fixes it. Devices repaired by outside shops aren't covered.

The cover has two important limits. Theft, loss and willful damage are not covered, and in those cases you pay the device's full retail price. If that worries you, ask your own insurer about cover for subscribed devices.

One thing to plan for is that you can't shorten a term after you've received the device. Ending early after the 24-hour return window costs an RM350 early termination fee.
